“One who is established in a comfortable posture

while concentrating on the inner self alone

naturally becomes immersed

in the spontaneous arising of the heart's ocean of bliss .”

Jaideve Sing, the Siva Sutras

Katya Hayes has been a devoted lover of yoga for the past 15 years. She is the owner of, and primary teacher at Open Heart Yoga Studio in Queens Bay where she teaches classes ranging from gentle beginners to Power Vinyasa. In 1996 life steered her to find her spiritual guru, Lee Seng Young, while living and teaching in Korea. This wonderful connection led her to participate in a year long teacher training program. She then became the first western woman to receive certification by the International Korean Yoga Association. Finding her teacher, and more specifically the ancient teachings of yoga and Buddhism, led her to a lifelong delight for this beautiful and healing art. Since that time she has studied intensively in the traditions of Iyengar, Ashtanga and vinyasa flow. For the past 12 years Katya has been the primary instructor for the yoga program at the world class Mountain Trek Fitness and health Spa. This role led her to produce the DVD titled Anywhere Yoga – A Gentle Practice for everyday living. She has also graced the cover of two best selling yoga books written by her teacher.

After teaching for many years both in BC and in the USA Katya decided to dive back into the role of student, and in 2009 completed an 8 month training program with Nicki Doane and Eddie Modestini. This gift of working intimately with teachers so rooted in tradition relit the fires of passion for yoga, and Katya's classes reflect that ecstatic joy and heart felt celebration she feels. Katya’s diverse teaching style is both a testament to her belief that every style of yoga is of benefit and service to the world, and that no matter what your age, size, ability, gender, race, or socio-economic background, yoga can offer unconditional healing and grace. Her classes often feature music, pranayama, dynamic sequencing, and a wild side that gets the heart a’ dancing. Katya lives with her husband and three fabulous children in Queens Bay, BC.
